Bill Moyers, the often maligned “liberal” accused of ”truthspeak***,” appears to care little for ideologues and even less for spin (truth speak)…He puts stories out there exactly as he sees it and his “seeing” usually entails lots of research and discussion with knowledgeable people.
In an article, on the Bill Moyers and Company website, Moyers, along with co-author, Michael Winship, addresses the issue of gun “rights” or, more correctly, the fallacy of “gun rights” as promoted by those who claim they have them.
This grim anniversary of the Newtown, Conn., killings, with 28 dead, reminded us of that moment back in 2000 when Charlton Heston made his defiant boast at the NRA convention that gun control advocates would have to pry his rifle from his “cold, dead hands.” You would have thought he had returned to that fantasy world of Hollywood where, in a previous incarnation, he portrayed those famous Indian killers Andrew Jackson and Buffalo Bill Cody, whose Wild West, as Cody marketed it, still courses through the bloodstream of American mythology.
For sure, Heston wasn’t channeling his most famous role, as Moses in The Ten Commandments, striding down from Mount Sinai with a stone tablet on which had been chiseled God’s blueprint for a civilized society, including, “Thou Shalt Not Kill!”
But the Good Lord seems not to have anticipated the National Rifle Association, its delegates lustily cheering Heston as his demagoguery brought them to their feet. Started after the Civil War by two former officers of the Union army who were disconsolate that their troops had shown such poor marksmanship in battle, its purpose was to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.” Now, its conscience as cold and dead as Charlton Heston’s grip on his gun, the NRA has become the armed bully of American politics, the enabler of the “gunfighter nation,” as cultural historian Richard Slotkin calls it, whose exceptionalism of which so many patriots fervently boast, includes a high tolerance for the slaughter of the innocent.
Heston and company, as in the NRA, would use their own “truth speak” so often that there would be a tiny fringe of ideologues who actually think their “god” had re-written those Ten Commandments since “Moses” was pushing their new Subsection under the sixth Commandment:
VI. 1 If you happen to kill, scream “2nd Amendment” and all is forgiven.
Since Newtown, and the murder of 28 innocents, the US has seen over 33,000 gun deaths (as of 12/17/2013, as reported by the CDC) with only approximately 11,600 reported by the “news”.
Gun purchases are way up and with it, the gun manufacturers are making millions of dollars off those gun buys…
Those gun manufacturers fund the NRA. In fact, the NRA board is made up of gun manufacturers and gun dealers, politicians and one or two “faces” added to the mix (Tom Selleck and Ted Nugent).
The NRA continues to beat the drums of ignorance and angst, fighting against any legislation that might force more comprehensive checks on those buying or using guns, fight any regulation that might cut the millions in profits made by dealers and manufacturers – those merchants of death that care nothing about the blood flowing….
“…The biggest publicly traded firearms manufacture in the United States, Sturm Ruger, had more than half a billion dollars in sales for the first nine months of this year, 45 percent higher than two years ago, with a 67 percent profit rise over the same period…”
According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek. 16 states responded to Newtown by loosening their gun laws; others passed laws that exempt gun permits from their public records; and in Colorado, a state that passed three new gun laws, the NRA and their screeching mouthpieces succeeded in recalling 2 of the gun law supporters from the state house and forced one other to resign in order to save the seat for another democrat to serve in her place (to stop the recall and election effort that she knew would result in an NRA promoted shill).
And as the gun manufacturers ply the fearful, the vengeful, and the arrogant with more weaponry – weaponry created for the sole purpose…. to kill – the innocents are kept hostage at the end of the barrel.
The battle for the nation is raging in the courts, in the State House and on the Senate floor. The battle for the nation’s soul has been handed over to politicians and false prophets paid for by…the NRA
***Truth speak is the Orwellian term for “The Noble Lie” – say something often enough, it becomes the “truth” to those who hear it – it will ring true out of familiarity.
